Description
One time, when my husband visited me in Russia, we went to St. Peterburg. I took a lot of photos of this beautiful city. When I travel I always do sketches or photos. Then later I can do nice paintings. I like to draw and paint the historical buildings and architectural details.
The dome of St. Isaac’s Cathedral dominates the skyline of St. Petersburg and it’s gilded cupola can be seen glistening from all over the city. You can climb up, as we did, the 300 or so steps to the observation walkway at the base of the cathedral’s dome and enjoy the breathtaking views over the city.
The church itself is an architectural marvel. Built by the French-born architect Auguste Montferrand to be the main church of the Russian Empire, and was decorated in the most elaborate way possible. When you enter the cathedral you pass through one of the porticos - note that the columns are made of single pieces of red granite and weigh 80 tons each. Inside the church many of the icons were created using mosaic techniques and the iconostasis is decorated with 8 malachite and 2 lapis lazuli columns.
This is an ink drawing with watercolor. I like to do this kind of technique. I can do small details with a fine line ink pen. After finishing the ink sketch I try very light layers of watercolor. I like to do ink drawings but watercolor always brings more life and feelings to this place.
